Shienbaum wants to sue Google for the name 'Gulf of America'

The president of Mexico wants to sue the tech giant for adapting the name of the gulf on its maps

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced on Thursday that her government is evaluating the possibility of filing a lawsuit against Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico as "Gulf of America" on Google Maps.

Sheinbaum indicated that her administration is analyzing the situation with legal advice before making a decision, but expressed her hope that Google will review the name change.

The decision to rename the gulf came after President Donald Trump signed an executive order that changed the name on the maps. In the United States, Google Maps users can now see "Gulf of America," while users outside the United States and Mexico will see both names.

Trump defended the change during an interview, stating that  "Gulf of America" was a beautiful and appropriate name, given the vast territory it covers, among other reasons.

In January, when President Trump returned to the White House, an executive order was signed in which the importance of the territory in U.S. security and economy was emphasized.

The main criticisms from Sheinbaum were based on the argument that Trump can't make a name change of that magnitude, however the Mexican couldn't be more wrong.

Previously, in 2012, a Mississippi legislator proposed a name change for those portions of the gulf that touched U.S. territory. Despite this, the idea did not prosper at that time.

Despite the anger of the Mexican leftist, the President of the United States has the right to make the name change, and so do the companies that choose to do so. In recent weeks, both Google and Apple have made this change.

This is not the only change that President Trump's administration is pushing, as significant progress has also been made with the renaming of Mount McKinley in Alaska. This had been replaced by "Mount Denali" by the Obama administration for progressive purposes.

Sheinbaum criticized the modification, emphasizing that the name "Gulf of Mexico" has been internationally recognized for a long time. The Mexican president urged Google to review the executive order signed by Trump, arguing that the order doesn't cover the entire gulf.

In addition to Google, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) also confirmed that it is updating its systems and charts to reflect the name change, not only of the Gulf of Mexico but also of Mount McKinley in Alaska, which is now known as Denali, as previously agreed.

The FAA indicated that these updates will be ready for the next publication cycle, which normally occurs every 56 days.
