Outrage in Mexico Over the Murder of Veterinarian Héctor Hernández in Tultepec

The crime has sparked protests and highlights the impunity in the State of Mexico

The murder of the veterinarian Héctor Hernández Cañas in Tultepec, Estado de México, has caused shock and outrage throughout the country. The tragic event, which occurred on February 8, 2025, has sparked protests in various cities, where veterinarians and citizens demand justice, protection, and an end to impunity in the region.

This case not only highlights the lack of security for professionals in the sector but also puts Estado de México back in the spotlight for its uncontrolled violence crisis and failed justice system. The murders and attacks against civilians occur daily, with an inefficient judicial system and security forces unable to stop the chaos.

An aggression that escalated to murder

Héctor Hernández, 45 years old, was a well-known veterinarian in Tultepec for his commitment to animal health. The tragedy began with the death of a dog at his clinic, which sparked the fury of its owners, who accused him of negligence and began to harass him.

The aggression was not limited to insults. In the days leading up to his murder, Héctor was threatened on social media, intimidated at his own clinic, and attacked in public. Despite this, he received no support from the authorities or protective measures.

In Estado de México, one of the most violent places in the country, the lack of police intervention and impunity have normalized attacks against civilians. Even when there are explicit threats, complaints do not progress or are ignored, allowing crimes to be committed without anyone doing anything to prevent them.

The brutal murder and impunity in the region

On February 8, a group of people stormed Hernández's clinic and attacked him with extreme violence. He suffered fatal blows and wounds and died before reaching the hospital. The strikers escaped without difficulty, highlighting the lack of an effective security system.

The authorities arrested two of the alleged perpetrators days later, but the rest of those involved remain free, fueling the perception that Estado de México is a lawless territory where justice arrives late or never.

Outrage and mobilization: "Being a veterinarian shouldn't be a death sentence"

Hernández's murder sparked a wave of protests in several cities across the country. Veterinarians, activists, and citizens have demonstrated with messages like "Justice for Héctor" and "Being a veterinarian shouldn't be a death sentence."

The marches have been peaceful but reflect society's exhaustion with the widespread violence in the region. Estado de México has one of the highest rates of homicides, femicides, and disappearances in the country, and the governmental response has been insufficient.

The security crisis in Estado de México

This murder adds to a long list of unsolved crimes in Estado de México, where murders, kidnappings, and disappearances occur daily. Despite the constant presence of the National Guard and security operations, violence figures continue to rise.
