A passenger bus collided with a trailer on the Cárdenas-Coatzacoalcos highway. The impact left 30 dead.
A tragic accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, February 9 in Tabasco. A passenger bus collided head-on with a cargo trailer on the Cárdenas-Coatzacoalcos highway. The preliminary toll is devastating:more than 30 dead and several injured.
Some are in critical condition. The disaster has mobilized emergency services and state authorities.

A devastating crash in the middle of the night
The accident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on a heavily traveled highway section. The bus, which was traveling from Tapachula to Mexico City, was carrying approximately 40 passengers. For reasons still unknown, it collided head-on with a trailer traveling in the opposite direction.
The impact was brutal. Witnesses and rescue teams described a harrowing scene. The bus was destroyed at the front, and the trailer was overturned on the side of the road.
More than 30 dead and multiple injured
State authorities confirmed that at least 30 people died at the scene. Most were bus passengers. Among the victims are men, women, and children. Official identities have not yet been released.
Several injured were taken to hospitals in Cárdenas and Villahermosa. Some are in critical condition. Emergency teams worked for hours to rescue survivors trapped in the wreckage.
"It was a heartbreaking scene. There were people calling for help and many lifeless bodies", recounted a paramedic who participated in the rescue efforts.

Ongoing investigation: What caused the accident?
Authorities have launched an investigation. Two main hypotheses are being considered:
- Driver fatigue or recklessness: It's possible that one of the drivers fell asleep or made an improper maneuver.
- Road and weather conditions: Visibility was reduced due to fog. This may have contributed to the impact.
Experts from the Tabasco Prosecutor's Office and the National Guard are working at the site. They seek to clarify the facts and determine the exact causes.
Reactions and emergency measures
The Governor of Tabasco, Carlos Manuel Merino, lamented the tragedy. He assured that his administration will support the victims' families.
"We have given instructions for the injured to receive immediate medical attention. We will also follow up with the families of the deceased", he stated on social media.
Meanwhile, the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) announced a safety review on the Cárdenas-Coatzacoalcos highway. They aim to detect possible failures in the road infrastructure.
A renewed call to improve road safety
This tragic event reignites the debate on road safety in Mexico. Especially on routes with high passenger bus traffic. According to data from the Mexican Institute of Transportation (IMT), in 2024 there were more than 4,000 bus accidents on the country's highways.
The number of fatalities exceeded 800 people. The accident in Tabasco adds to a long list of tragedies in recent years. Experts call for greater controls and regulations in public transportation.
As investigations progress, the victims' families face a painful wait. They seek to recover the bodies of their loved ones and demand justice.
