La Derecha Diario Cienfuegos returns to the public scene at an event with Sheinbaum
General Cienfuegos, previously accused by the DEA of drug trafficking and money laundering, reappears in public, keeping his distance from the president during the event.
General Salvador Cienfuegos, former Secretary of National Defense in Enrique Peña Nieto's government, reappeared at a public event. His presence stood out at the commemoration of the 112th Anniversary of the Loyalty March. The event was led by President Claudia Sheinbaum at the Chapultepec Castle.
Since July 2024, Cienfuegos had maintained a low profile. His last appearance was in the Senate. At this event, he occupied the second row of the platform, just behind Sheinbaum's Cabinet. His return to the public sphere did not go unnoticed.
Before this event, Cienfuegos had attended events with less exposure. Among them, the inauguration of the Felipe Ángeles International Airport in March 2022. He also participated in the closing of the celebrations for the Bicentennial of the Military College and in a tribute to comedian Sergio Corona.
The charges against him and his exoneration
The accusations against Cienfuegos were serious. He was accused of conspiracy to traffic drugs and money laundering. However, he was exonerated in Mexico after the intervention of Andrés Manuel López Obrador's government.
The United States administration withdrew the charges citing foreign policy reasons. Shortly after, the Attorney General's Office (FGR) absolved him. This decision left many doubts about the transparency and independence of justice in Mexico.
Cienfuegos's return: What message does it send?
Cienfuegos's return to public life has caused controversy. His presence at official events sparks speculation about his role in current politics. This reinforces the perception of a complex relationship between politics, the military, and justice in Mexico.
