Physical and Mental Health: Another Failed Area of the 4t

Mexico is experiencing a severe decline on all health fronts and the solution doesn't seem to be in sight.

Mexico City, February 19, 2025. Mexico faces a health crisis ranging from a lack of supplies in hospitals to an increase in chronic diseases and mental health issues.

This situation has worsened due to budget cuts and structural deficiencies that endanger medical care for the most vulnerable population.

Budget cuts and hospital collapse

As of January 2025, the health system suffered a 34% budget reduction. This drastic decrease has especially affected the most needy sectors.

Hospitals and clinics are in critical condition due to a lack of supplies, medications, and medical staff.

The precariousness of the system has caused protests from health sector workers in different states of the country.

Chronic diseases on the rise

Chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular problems continue to rise, worsened by a lack of prevention and control.

According to recent data, heart diseases are the leading cause of death in Mexico, with a rate of 143.8 per 100,000 inhabitants. Diabetes ranks second with 86.4 cases.

These numbers exceed the OECD averages, reflecting the failure of government strategies to combat these ailments.

Unequal access to health

Access to medical services remains unequal, affecting the most marginalized communities.

While entities like Mexico City and Nuevo León concentrate the best hospital infrastructure, states like Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Guerrero lack basic care.

At least 18.7% of Mexicans do not have regular access to health services.

The collapse of mental health

The neglect of mental health is another serious problem. Factors such as stress, economic precariousness, and excessive use of social networks have triggered cases of depression and anxiety.

Experts warn that Mexico lacks an efficient psychological care system, leaving millions of people without support.

Health sector protests

In the face of the crisis, more than 5,000 health workers have taken to the streets in the State of Mexico and Mexico City to demand better working conditions and supply provision.

The demonstrations aim to highlight the abandonment of the sector and pressure the government to take urgent measures.

What's next for the health system?

The government must rethink its strategy and ensure a better distribution of resources to improve medical coverage.

Investment in mental health and the promotion of healthy habits are urgent to curb the crisis.

Without concrete actions, Mexico will remain mired in a collapsed health system, where millions of citizens are left adrift without quality medical care.
