The Argentine leader and the head of the multilateral organization held a meeting that lasted for one hour.
President Javier Milei held a meeting with Kristalina Georgieva, director of the IMF, with the purpose of advancing the negotiation of a new agreement between Argentina and the organization. Previously, just a few blocks from the White House, the president had met in a luxurious hotel in Maryland with Elon Musk, one of Donald Trump's main advisors.
Georgieva highlighted the "significant progress" of the Government's economic plan. "Today I received President Milei at the IMF to discuss Argentina's stabilization and growth plan, which is yielding significant results. Our teams continue to work constructively toward a new program," she stated on X.
An important fact, showing President Milei's global significance, is that it is the first time the IMF has given this type of welcome to a head of state. "Welcome Javier Milei, President of the Republic of Argentina," could be read on a huge image.
The meeting took place at the IMF offices, located at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 19th Street. Milei arrived joined by Luis "Toto" Caputo, Minister of Economy; Karina Milei, Secretary General of the Presidency; spokesperson Manuel Adorni; and Chancellor Gerardo Werthein.
Shortly after 7:30 PM (Argentina time), the Argentine president arrived escorted by a security operation composed of a police vehicle and five black SUVs.
He and his sister traveled in the first one, while the Chancellor and the head of the Treasury Department were in two others. Upon arrival, Milei embraced Leonardo Madcur, Argentina's representative on the IMF board. The meeting lasted for an hour.
This is the second meeting between Milei and Georgieva in the last month and seeks to reaffirm both parties' positions within the framework of the negotiation with the Fund.
The meeting with Elon Musk
In his first official activity in the United States, President Javier Milei held a meeting with Elon Musk, leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) of Donald Trump's Government, in a luxurious hotel in Maryland, where they discussed the international landscape and potential U.S. investments in Argentina.
The meeting began shortly after 3:15 PM, and almost four hours later, the official X Office of the President account shared an image of both. In the photo, the founder of Tesla is seen holding a real chainsaw, a gift symbolizing the state reform policies promoted by the Argentine president.
