The Argentine leader and the main advisor of the Trump administration had a meeting at a hotel in Maryland.
In his first official activity in the United States, President Javier Milei held a meeting with Elon Musk, leader of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) of Donald Trump's administration, at a luxurious hotel in Maryland, where they discussed the international landscape and possible U.S. investments in Argentina.
The meeting began shortly after 3:15 PM, and almost four hours later, the official account of X Office of the President shared an image of both. In the photo, the founder of Tesla is seen holding a real chainsaw, a gift symbolizing the state reform policies promoted by the Argentine leader.
After this first meeting, Milei is scheduled to meet with Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Musk arrived at the exclusive hotel located in National Harbor with complete discretion and was received by Milei, who was joined by his sister Karina Milei, Secretary General of the Presidency; Luis "Toto" Caputo, Minister of Economy; Gerardo Werthein, Chancellor, and Manuel Adorni, presidential spokesperson.
The day unfolded under a clear sky, although the cold was intense, with a temperature of 12 degrees below zero in shaded areas.
The conversation between Milei and Musk did not have a strict agenda. "They are two friends meeting in Washington," summarized a member of the official delegation. Musk maintains a close relationship with U.S. President Trump, and any statement from him can influence decisions made in the Oval Office.
The meeting with the IMF
After the meeting with Musk, President Milei and his entourage will move to Washington D.C. to meet with Kristalina Georgieva, executive director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
This will be the second meeting between Milei and Georgieva in the last month and will serve to reaffirm the positions of both parties regarding the ongoing negotiations between Argentina and the financial organization.
With the expected agreement with the IMF, the Argentine leader's goal is to strengthen the Central Bank's reserves and eliminate currency restrictions, promoting Argentina's economic activity and recovery.
