Milei's Government Advances in the Privatization of Road Corridors

They attribute the deterioration of the road network to the tariff delay and the lack of investment. The Government's conditions.

The national Government has initiated the process of privatization of Corredores Viales S.A., the state-owned company responsible for managing more than 9,000 kilometers of routes in Argentina. The decision, made official through decree 97/2025, establishes the concession of the road network under the public works with toll modality.

Privatization and execution plan

The Ministry of Economy, with the support of the Public Companies Transformation Agency, will be in charge of carrying out the privatization. The main actions to be executed include:

  • Termination of the current concession contracts of the sections assigned to Corredores Viales S.A.
  • Bidding for new concession contracts for the management of the corridors.
  • Dissolution and liquidation of Corredores Viales S.A., once the contracts are awarded.

Presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, explained that the model seeks to encourage private investment in road infrastructure. "The awarded companies will carry out the necessary works and will be financed through toll collection," he stated.

State of infrastructure and costs

The Government attributes the deterioration of the road network to tariff delays and lack of investment. According to official data, 45% of the network managed by Corredores Viales was in critical or poor condition at the start of the administration, which is equivalent to 3,402 kilometers.

In financial terms, the company recorded in 2023:

  • Accumulated losses of $268,000 million.
  • Debt with suppliers of $142,000 million.
  • Assistance from the National Treasury of $301,000 million.

The Government believes that privatization will improve infrastructure and ensure safe connectivity across the country's different regions.

Routes managed by Corredores Viales

The state-owned company manages ten sections of national routes, which will be privatized under the new scheme. Some of the main ones are:

  • National Route 34 and National Route 9: Santa Fe/Santiago del Estero border – La Banda, Santiago del Estero (327 km).
  • National Route 8 and National Route 36: Pilar – Villa Mercedes, San Luis (665 km).
  • National Route 7: Luján West Access – Córdoba/San Luis border (590 km).
  • Riccheri Access and Ezeiza-Cañuelas: Av. Gral. Paz – Ezeiza Airport (13 km).

The concession award process will include a public hearing to define the conditions. The selection of the awarded companies will be based on the lowest rate offered to the user, with no fee for the State or subsidies.

Toll rates will remain frozen until the concessionaires meet the trafficability standards, which include:

  • Zero potholes.
  • Horizontal and vertical signage.
  • Adequate lighting.

The State will establish a quarterly update scheme based on Indec indicators.

Corredores Viales and the Basic Law

Corredores Viales is one of the companies included in Article 7 of the Basic Law, along with:

  • Intercargo S.A.U.
  • Energy Argentina S.A. (Enarsa).
  • Water and Sanitation Argentina S.A. (AySA).
  • Railway Operating Company S.E. (SOFSE).
  • Belgrano Cargas y Logística S.A.

The Government argues that Corredores Viales duplicated functions with the National Road Directorate, so its privatization will allow for more efficient management of maintenance and development of road infrastructure.
