They Report a Pay-for-escape Scheme in Jorge Macri's Buenos Aires Police Stations

Since the current head of government took office, at least 66 escapes by dangerous criminals have been recorded.

The management of Jorge Macri at the helm of the Buenos Aires City government is marked by an alarming crisis in the penitentiary system of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA).

Since his assumption, at least 66 detainee escapes have been recorded, evidencing not only a concerning lack of control and security but also the possible existence of a potential illicit payment scheme that would facilitate these escapes.

Since Macri's assumption in 2023, ten escape incidents in police stations and Buenos Aires detention centers have been documented. This figure skyrocketed in 2024, with at least 49 inmates escaping in numerous incidents.

The trend continued in the early part of 2025, with six inmates escaping on February 10 and one more on February 16. These statistics not only reflect an escalation in the number of escapes but also a deepening of the structural and administrative shortcomings of the penitentiary system under Macri's administration.

One of the most critical factors is overcrowding in the city's police stations. Spaces designed for temporary detentions have become permanent detention centers due to the lack of adequate infrastructure by the Buenos Aires government.

Corruption within the penitentiary system is another alarming aspect. Reports indicate that, in the absence of resources and supervision, illegal markets have emerged where police sell inmates essential items and even negotiate the possibility of facilitating escapes in exchange for payments.

They don't take responsibility

In light of this situation, the Buenos Aires Security Minister, Waldo Wolff, offered a press conference a few weeks ago regarding the escape of six detainees from the detention center in the Caballito neighborhood. However, the minister of Jorge Macri, instead of accepting his responsibility, blamed the Government of Javier Milei.

"There's nowhere to put them in the City of Buenos Aires. To the political forces that taunt: the inmates belong to the Nation," Wolff stated, blaming the national administration.

Additionally, the Buenos Aires minister made it clear that the issue of the inmates "is not the responsibility" of the administration of the head of Government, Jorge Macri, and blamed previous governments. "It's something we inherited from the previous administration. We're now in the process of resolving it."
