Elon Musk plans a massive audit in one of the safest places in the world

The head of the Government Efficiency Department proposed the audit of Fort Knox and Senator Rand Paul offered his help

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, could have the opportunity to conduct an audit of one of the United States' most valuable and mysterious assets:the gold stored at Fort Knox.

The proposal arises after Musk, in response to a post on X, expressed interest in reviewing the 4,580 tons of gold stored in this well-known military depot. Following his comment, Senator Rand Paul (Republican-Kentucky.) supported the idea, suggesting an audit of Fort Knox's gold reserves.

Fort Knox, located in Kentucky, is one of the most secure facilities in the world, and its historical function has been to store large quantities of gold, particularly since 1937.

Although the facility has been a symbol of the wealth and economic power of the United States, interest in its contents has been a source of conspiracy theories for decades. Many people have speculated that the gold said to be there actually no longer exists, or that it has been sold by the government without proper transparency.

These rumors began to circulate strongly after the United States abandoned the gold standard in 1971, which caused Fort Knox's gold to lose some of its relevance in backing the currency's value.

The proposal to audit Fort Knox is not new. In 2010, Senator Rand Paul's father, former Congressman Ron Paul, also pushed for an initiative to audit the country's gold reserves, in line with his concerns about the lack of transparency in the management of government assets.

However, access to Fort Knox's gold has been extremely limited over the years. The last time the public had access to the facility was in 2017, when the United States Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin, visited the site joined by other authorities, confirming that the gold reserves were intact.

Interest in Fort Knox's gold is based not only on conspiracy theory but also on the economic value of this metal. Although the Federal Reserve of the United States values the gold stored there at $42.22 per ounce, a figure that dates back several decades, the current market value of gold is much higher, exceeding USD 2,900 per ounce.

This means that if the current value of Fort Knox's gold reserves were calculated, the total would amount to hundreds of billions of dollars, much more than what is reflected in the official accounting records.

Even though Fort Knox's gold no longer directly backs the United States currency since the country abandoned the gold standard in 1971, it remains one of the largest reserves in the world.

Most of the Federal Reserve's gold is stored in New York City, in the New York Federal Reserve building, which houses gold from other countries besides the United States.

The issue of transparency and the review of government resources has been a recurring theme on Musk's agenda, who has created a team called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), dedicated to auditing the United States' public spending.

This team, initially small, has grown significantly and is part of Musk's efforts to promote greater efficiency and reduce waste in the federal government.

The proposal to audit Fort Knox's gold reserves embodies both an interest in transparency and a certain public fascination with the mysterious gold depot.

The facility remains a symbol of the United States' economic strength, but it is also a place surrounded by mystery and theories that have endured for generations.

Musk's idea of conducting an audit could be a way to give people clearer and more secure access to the truth about what is really stored there.

The proposal by Elon Musk, supported by Senator Rand Paul, to conduct an audit of Fort Knox's gold reserves has revived public interest in one of the United States' most mysterious institutions.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to assure that the gold reserves remain intact, although the lack of transparency in official audits leaves the door open to speculation and skepticism.
