On Monday afternoon, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, mentioned that he is strongly considering the celebration of a free trade agreement (FTA) with Argentina.
After strongly praising the President of the Argentine Republic, Javier Milei, Trump mentioned that he is in a strong stage of study in what is considered a pivot change in the commercial policy of the North American country.
After pointing out that the President of Argentina has rescued the country from a very tough economic situation, the American leader replied to a question during a press conference about the possibility of establishing a treaty that would eliminate all tariff barriers between both countries.
Meanwhile, the American leader also considered the application of tariff measures for other states such as the European Union and China, which are also major trading partners of Argentina.
The President of the United States emphasized that such an agreement would benefit the economies of both countries by reducing trade barriers and increasing investment opportunities.
Trump also highlighted that a stronger trade relationship would help Argentina improve its economic situation, ensuring that the United States was willing to work closely with Argentina to achieve this goal, favoring mutual growth and strengthening bilateral cooperation.
According to the American President, one of the main factors that enabled the strong consideration of this agreement is the great relationship he has with President Javier Milei.
The Secretary of Government Efficiency, Elon Musk, has reacted with an immense degree of excitement to Trump's announcement, stating that it would be great. It is not the first time Musk has expressed his enthusiasm for an announcement related to Argentina, due to the great relationship he shares with President Milei.
Currently, the main impediment to the formalization of a free trade agreement with the United States, is Argentina's presence in MERCOSUR. This imperfect customs union restricts the country in modifying tariff policy.
