Censorship in the Senate: Noroña Turns Off Lilly Téllez's Microphone

The Senate President silences the opposition senator in a new attack on freedom of expression in Congress

On February 19, 2025, the Senate of the Republic experienced a new episode of authoritarianism from Morena. Its president, Gerardo Fernández Noroña, turned off the microphone of PAN senator Lilly Téllez to prevent her from asking a question to her colleague Alejandra Barrales.

While Senator Barrales was speaking about the participation of Mexican troops in an event in Dominican Republic, Lilly Téllez requested the floor to ask a question on the topic.

However, Fernández Noroña, in a clear abuse of authority, denied her the floor and proceeded to turn off her microphone, arguing that Téllez was trying to "push the political agenda."

Morena and its double discourse on democracy

The act of censorship has provoked indignation in the opposition. Legislators have pointed out that Noroña's behavior reflects the authoritarianism that dominates in the government of the self-proclaimed Fourth Transformation.

Meanwhile, the ruling party boasts of being a democratic and freedom movement, in practice it doesn't allow debate or confrontation of ideas.

Reactions to the outrage

Various voices have condemned this act of censorship. Political analysts and citizens have expressed their concern about the growing intolerance toward opposing voices within the Senate.

Senator Téllez has publicly denounced Fernández Noroña's dictatorial attitude. According to her, these actions seek to silence any criticism of the ruling party.

Complicit silence of the ruling party

So far, neither Claudia Sheinbaum nor other leaders of Morena have condemned Noroña's outrage. Once again, their silence shows their support for censorship when it comes to silencing the opposition.

This episode reinforces the concern of many citizens about the direction of the country under the control of the ruling party, where imposition and abuse of power seem to be the norm.

Acts like Fernández Noroña's not only tarnish the image of the Senate. They also represent a latent threat to essential freedoms in Mexico.
