La Derecha Diario Monreal Suggests That Mexico Support 'el Mayo' Zambada: Government at the Service of the Narco?
Morena's leader of deputies opens the door to supporting the capo in his repatriation request.
The coordinator of Morena's deputies, Ricardo Monreal, caused controversy by suggesting that Claudia Sheinbaum's government consider supporting Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada in his attempt at repatriation.
Zambada, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, seeks to return to Mexico after being detained in Texas in 2024.
Monreal stated that the government should not accept "blackmail", but also not rule out the possibility of providing legal assistance. According to the capo, his transfer to the United States was illegal.
A country under the control of crime
The possible intervention of the Mexican government in favor of Zambada has raised alarms. Morena's security policy has been harshly criticized for its passivity in the face of organized crime.
Mexico is experiencing historic levels of violence, while the cartels operate with total impunity. The idea of facilitating the return of a drug trafficker of this magnitude is concerning.
Since the beginning of Andrés Manuel López Obrador's term, Morena has promoted the strategy of "hugs, not bullets". This has only strengthened the cartels and increased violence throughout the country.
Now, Monreal's proposal reinforces the idea that the government prioritizes criminals over the safety of citizens.
Sheinbaum leaves the door open to drug trafficking
So far, President Claudia Sheinbaum has not ruled out a possible intervention in favor of El Mayo Zambada. She hinted that it is necessary to analyze "how the capture occurred", which leaves open the possibility of cooperation with the capo's request.
The issue has already caused strong reactions in the political and social spheres. Experts warn that if the government supports Zambada, Mexico will send a message of impunity and weakness in the face of organized crime.
Meanwhile, insecurity continues to escalate and thousands of Mexican families suffer from violence. The State seems more willing to listen to criminals than to its own citizens.
