Another hospital without medicines: Nachón Hospital in Xalapa suspends scheduled surgeries

The lack of anesthesia and other essential medical supplies for surgeries are not available at the medical center.

Another public hospital in Mexico faces problems due to the lack of medical supplies, a recurring situation under the Morena government. This time, the crisis affects Xalapa, Veracruz.

The Regional Hospital of Xalapa "Doctor Luis F. Nachón" suspended all scheduled surgeries in its surgical services due to the shortage of essential supplies.

Lack of anesthesia and key medications

Among the missing supplies is anesthesia, essential for performing surgical procedures. Without this supply, surgeries must be postponed, affecting hundreds of patients.

The head of the Anesthesiology Service, Octavio Arturo Carrión Mora, reported this serious deficiency to the hospital director, Antonio Vázquez García.

The situation was notified through memorandum HRDLFN/ANESTESIOLOGÍA/01/2024, dated February 11, 2025. In the document, Carrión Mora highlighted the urgent need for anesthetics to avoid the interruption of surgeries.

"Due to the lack of essential supplies and medications, this hospital unit doesn't have anesthetics. Therefore, we are forced to suspend scheduled surgeries in all surgical services."

Suspension of surgeries until further notice

According to the memorandum, surgeries will remain suspended until the necessary supplies are received to ensure medical care.

The hospital reported that the available medication will be allocated exclusively to the Toco-surgery and Emergency areas to prevent a greater crisis.

"This is to ensure the population receives the quality care it deserves."

The lack of supplies was also reported to the medical deputy director, Norma Patricia López Pretelin, and the coordinator of Quality and Hospital Development, María Inés Méndez Guzmán.

Governor Rocío Nahle promises immediate solution

The crisis reached the ears of the governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle. She committed to sending sufficient supplies by Wednesday.

The delivery would include 205 boxes of medications and more than 3,000 pieces of medical solutions. This aims to allow the hospital to continue operating normally.

For now, it remains to wait for the arrival of the supplies. Despite the state government's promise, the shortage of medications remains a serious problem. So far, it hasn't been definitively solved in the country's health system.
