Corruption in Amlo's Government: Asf Detects Irregularities of More Than 51 Billion Pesos

The fifth year of López Obrador's administration exposes misappropriations and opacity in the management of public resources

The Superior Audit Office of the Federation (ASF) revealed in the 2023 Public Account billion-dollar irregularities exceeding 51 billion pesos. These deviations correspond to the fifth year of government of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The report presented by the head of the ASF, David Colmenares Páramo, confirmed that 48 billion pesos remain unclarified. This embezzlement doubles the figure recorded in the previous public account.

The Institutionalized Theft of the 4T

The ASF detected anomalies in the Subnational Government System. These irregularities have grown alarmingly compared to previous years.

"This is mainly explained by the implementation of new information technologies and artificial intelligence," stated Colmenares.

Beyond technological advances in auditing, what is evident is thatcorruption in the Morena government continues to rise.

So far, the amount recovered by the ASF is just 930 million pesos. An insignificant figure compared to the size of the embezzlement.

The Plundering of the Public Sector

The Special Audit of Financial Compliance detected that within the federal public sector there are still 8,599 million pesos unaccounted for. More than 80% of these irregularities correspond to:

  • Laboratorios de Biológicos y Reactivos de México (Birmex).
  • Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).
  • Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex).
  • National Fund for Tourism Promotion (Fonatur).

These organizations have been key in López Obrador's administration. They have also been involved in multiple corruption scandals. From the opaque handling of medicine purchases to inflated contracts in megaprojects like the Maya Train and the Dos Bocas Refinery.

State Companies and Agencies Also Implicated

The irregularities also affect state companies. 16% of the detected deviations correspond to productive, subsidiary, and directly controlled companies. Only 4% is linked to federal government secretariats.

For the first time, the ASF audited entities that had never been reviewed with this depth. Notable ones include:

  • Diconsa.
  • National Institute of Migration (INM).
  • IMSS.
  • National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI).
  • Local judicial powers and two autonomous universities.

Criminal Charges on the Horizon?

The ASF identified 29 forensic audits that show irregularities for at least 6,700 million pesos.

"Amounts with possible patrimonial damage have been identified. They now move to a second stage of auditing in the Special Audit of Monitoring, Reports, and Investigation," explained Colmenares Páramo.

In this phase, observations can be clarified or formal investigations can be initiated.

This would include the filing of criminal charges and reparatory procedures against the responsible officials.

Cover-Up or Justice?

The findings of the ASF confirm the obvious: the 4T government is marked by corruption, opacity, and the diversion of public resources.

The key question is: Will those responsible be punished, or will Morena continue to cover up the plundering?
