AMLO's handkerchief; it didn't stop the increase in corruption in Mexico

Mexico falls to 140th place in the 2024 CPI, reaching its worst historical score with 26/100, surpassing only countries like Guatemala and Venezuela.

Mexico has suffered a drastic drop in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2024. The country received a score of 26 out of 100, the lowest in its history.

During the first four years of Andrés Manuel López Obrador's administration, Mexico maintained a score of 31. However, in the last year, the figure dropped significantly. Currently, the country only surpasses Guatemala, Paraguay, Honduras, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela in the region.

Ineffective Judiciary and Unpunished Corruption

One of the key factors in this decline is the lack of effectiveness of the Judiciary. According to Transparency International, impunity in corruption cases has worsened public perception.

High-profile cases like Odebrecht and Segalmex have highlighted the weak enforcement of the law. The lack of sanctions has eroded citizens' trust in justice institutions.

Corruption and Violence Against Activists

Mexico is also one of the most dangerous countries for human rights defenders. Corruption and violence are closely related.

Since 2019, 80% of activist murders in the Americas occurred in the region. A high percentage of these crimes have happened in Mexico.

Global Comparison and CPI Methodology

Globally, Denmark, Finland, and Singapore lead the list with the lowest levels of corruption. In contrast, Venezuela, Somalia, and South Sudan occupy the last places.

The CPI measures corruption in the public sector based on surveys of experts, academics, and businesspeople. Its goal is to provide a broad view of the perception of corruption worldwide.
