Seismic Activity Increased in Mexico, Oaxaca Is One of the Most Affected States.

Uncertainty grows, seismic activity increases, and Mexico lacks resources

In the early months of 2025, Mexico has experienced a notable increase in seismic activity.

It is important to highlight the uncertainty of such events, as in the previous six-year term the Natural Disaster Fund (FONDEN) was dismantled; it was a financial fund used to address emergency situations and natural disasters.

According to the National Seismological Service (SSN), during January 2,992 earthquakes with epicenters in Mexican territory were recorded, representing a significant increase compared to the 2,294 tremors reported in the same month of 2024.

Regions with the highest seismic activity

The southern and southwestern states of the country continue to be the most affected by seismic activity. Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Chiapas concentrate the majority of the recorded earthquakes, due to the interaction of the Cocos and North American tectonic plates in these areas.

In particular, Oaxaca has been the scene of multiple seismic movements of varying magnitudes.

Earthquakes of greater magnitude

The most significant seismic event so far this year occurred on January 12 at 2:32 a.m., with a magnitude of 6.1 and an epicenter located 47 kilometers southwest of Coalcomán, Michoacán.

This earthquake was felt in several regions of the country, generating alerts and preventive evacuations, although no significant material damage or casualties were reported.

Comparison with previous years

The increase of 698 earthquakes in January 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year has caused concern among specialists and authorities.

This increase could be related to natural processes of energy release accumulated in the tectonic plates, although the possible influence of anthropogenic factors, such as the extraction of natural resources, is also being investigated.

Prevention and preparation measures

In this context, civil protection authorities have intensified seismic awareness and education campaigns. The population is advised to:

  • Develop family emergency plans: Define meeting points and safe evacuation routes.
  • Prepare emergency backpacks: Include water, non-perishable food, flashlight, radio, and first aid kit.
  • Participate in drills: Familiarize themselves with action protocols during an earthquake.
  • Review the infrastructure of the homes: Ensure that constructions comply with structural safety regulations.

Importance of constant monitoring

The SSN, in collaboration with academic and governmental institutions, continues to monitor seismic activity in real-time.

The constant updating of data allows authorities to make informed decisions and issue timely alerts to the population.

It is essential for citizens to stay informed through official channels and avoid spreading rumors or unverified information.
