Extradite Treviño Morales Brothers, Leaders of Los Zetas, to the United States

Both face charges in the District of Columbia for drug trafficking acts against the United States.

The brothers Miguel Ángel and Omar Treviño Morales, leaders of Los Zetas known as Z40 and Z42 were extradited this Thursday to the USA.

The information was confirmed by the Webb County Sheriff's Office in Texas. The office also alerted the residents of Nuevo Laredo and other municipalities in Tamaulipas, due to the criminal incidence in the border state.

A couple of hours earlier, Z-40's lawyer,Juan Manuel Delgado, was interviewed by journalist Ciro Gómez Leyva. He stated that his legal defense was not aware of Miguel Ángel's extradition.

"As far as we know, there is no kind of transfer to the United States of America. An extradition would be impossible"

asserted the lawyer on Thursday morning.

He detailed that Z-40's extradition process was in the "judicial opinion" phase.

That is, it was still pending for a judge to issue an opinion to corroborate whether it was feasible to extradite him or not. However, shortly before 11:00 a.m., the Webb County Sheriff confirmed his extradition as well as his brother's.

Why the USA requires Z-40 and Z-42

In the USA, Miguel Ángel and Omar Treviño Morales are identified as leaders of Los Zetas.

Los Zetas are a bloodthirsty group composed of deserters from the Mexican Special Forces.

Miguel Ángel was arrested in July 2013, while his brother's arrest took place in March 2015.

Despite being behind bars, the US Department of Justice maintains that both continued to control the Northeast Cartel.

The Northeast Cartel was formed as a splinter of Los Zetas and whose main stronghold is Tamaulipas.

In October 2024, the District of Columbia in the USA released a indictment against the two brothers for the following charges:

- Engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise

- Conspiracy to traffic drugs

- Firearms offenses and

- Money laundering.

In addition, Z-40 has two other formal indictments in Texas and one more in New York.

Z-42, meanwhile, also has the same charges in Texas. One of them was issued in June 2012 for money laundering from drug trafficking through the training, breeding, and racing of horses.
