The Senate Approved a Budget Bill With Some Priorities for Trump
The United States Senate voted to approve the budget resolution in a vote that must pass to Congress.
Early Friday, Senate Republicans achieved a significant victory over their House counterparts by officially passing a budget resolution that addresses some of President Donald Trump's priorities, such as border security.
After hours of continuous voting on Democratic amendments, the bill that funds border security, energy, and defense was finally voted on in the Senate.
The bill passed with a 52-48 vote, with Senator Rand Paul (Republican-Kentucky) as the only Republican to oppose it. All Senate Democrats voted against it.

The Senate voted on several amendments and points of order for nearly 10 hours, considering dozens of them on the floor. Finally, two Republican-led amendments were adopted.
The Senate Majority Leader, John Thune (Republican-South Dakota), previously explained that the budget resolution addresses key priorities of President Trump, such as securing the border, implementing immigration policies, rebuilding the military, and creating energy dominance for the United States.
Although the House of Representatives was expected to take the lead in passing a budget bill, Senate Republicans moved forward with their own plan, pushing their proposal through a key committee and overcoming a procedural hurdle.
The maneuver was carried out even after Trump endorsed the House proposal, which he did on his Truth Social account.

After the resolution's approval in the Senate, the Senate Budget Committee Chairman, Lindsey Graham (Republican-South Carolina), expressed his satisfaction with the discipline shown by Senate Republicans to ensure that the most transformational border security project in history becomes a reality.
Graham also expressed hope that the House of Representatives will pass a major bill that meets Trump's priorities, but noted that the Senate's approach provided the necessary funds to continue border security, immigration law enforcement, and military rebuilding.
The urgency of the situation was underscored by his comment that "time is of the essence." The decision to move forward with the Senate's alternative budget plan, which is two-pronged compared to the House's approach of passing a single large bill, was backed by Vice President JD Vance.

Trump also seemed to agree with the Senate's effort, posting on Truth Social a message thanking Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Republicans for their work in funding Trump's border security agenda.
He emphasized that "records" were being set in detaining illegal immigrants and that the administration was delivering to the American people more quickly and successfully than thought possible.
The legislative process included a procedural vote that triggered a 50-hour debate clock, which ended Thursday night. Then began a voting marathon, known as "Vote-a-Rama," in which senators could present an unlimited number of amendments, many of which were put to a vote.

This process forced Republicans to take potentially uncomfortable votes proposed by Democrats. The Democratic Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer (Democrat-New York), senselessly accused Republicans of backing a plan that favors Trump's billionaires at the expense of American families, and warned that Democrats will continue to expose this "truth" over the coming weeks and months.
The Senate Republicans' budget plan includes two reconciliation bills. The first addresses Trump's priorities on border security, fossil fuel energy, and national defense, while the second, to be drafted later, will focus on extending Trump's tax policies from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), whose cuts will begin to expire at the end of 2025.
Reconciliation allows the party in power to advance its agenda with a simple majority of 51 votes instead of the usual 60 needed for legislation approval in the Senate, making it easier to pass budget-related measures and other fiscal issues.

The Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson (Republican-Louisiana), stated that the Senate bill, with its two-pronged approach, would be rejected in the House.
Johnson has maintained his commitment to include tax cuts in the law along with border security and other priorities. Although the House has managed to advance its version in the relevant committee, a floor vote has not yet been scheduled.
