Oscar 2025: Who Won the Most Important Award of the Night

The Academy revealed which film was chosen as Best Picture in an edition where the competition was tight.

After months of speculation and an awards season full of uncertainty, the 97th edition of the Oscars finally crowned its big winner. With ten nominated films, the competition was tighter than ever.

The finalists were:

In an announcement made by Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal, it was confirmed that Anora took home the golden statuette.

A tight battle until the end

Unlike last year, when Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer dominated the season, this edition had no clear favorite. The bets were divided between Anora, Conclave, and The Brutalist, which kept the anticipation until the last moment.

As the gala progressed, the outlook began to tilt in favor of Anora, something that was confirmed when its victory was announced.

A success at the 2025 Oscars

The film directed by Sean Baker achieved an impressive performance, taking home five of the six categories in which it competed:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director for Sean Baker
  • Best Original Screenplay
  • Best Editing
  • Best Actress for Mikey Madison

The biggest surprise came in the Best Actress category. Although Demi Moore was the favorite for her role in The Substance, the award went to Mikey Madison. The young actress had already won the BAFTA and the Independent Spirit, but no one expected her to prevail at the Oscars.

What is Anora about?

The film follows the story of Anora, a sex worker from Brooklyn whose life changes drastically when she meets Ivan, a young Russian who hires her at the club where she works. What starts as a simple encounter ends in an impulsive wedding, but the marriage doesn't turn out as she expected.

Soon, Ani is forced to face her husband's powerful parents and fight for her relationship in a completely unexpected context.
