Meta Bets on a Key Submarine Megacable to Lead the Ai Era

Mark Zuckerberg's company announced a submarine cable of over 50,000 km (31,068 miles) that will connect the five continents.

In today's world, two resources are key: rare earths and submarine cables. The former because China dominates their production and they are essential for technology. The latter because they support internet, streaming, and telecommunications.

Without these cables, global connectivity wouldn't be possible. Therefore, as the demand for AI and data grows, giants like Meta and Google invest in expanding them.

Waterworth: the submarine cable that will go around the world

Meta was already working on a cable over 7,000 km, but now it goes further with Waterworth. A network of more than 50,000 km that will connect America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

To understand the magnitude, Earth has a circumference of about 40,000 km. When it's ready, it will be the largest infrastructure of its kind in the world.

Which countries will it connect?

The plan is to connect the two coasts of United States with Brazil, South Africa, India, and Australia. They didn't provide exact figures, but it's a multi-billion dollar investment that will be made in stages.

For comparison, Google is spending about 1 billion dollars on a cable between Japan and the west coast of the U.S.

Meta's move with artificial intelligence

The project isn't just to improve connectivity. Meta seeks to dominate the era of AI, which needs to move data in real time.

These cables have several pairs of optical fiber. The most common have between 8 and 16 pairs, but Waterworth will have 24, making it the one with the highest capacity.

A plan with extra security

The layout is already underway. Some sections will be more than 7,000 meters deep, crossing seismic risk areas.

Meta will also reinforce protection in coastal areas, where ships often damage these cables.
