Is Gago Still at Boca? Two Candidates Who Were Mentioned to Replace Him Spoke
Amid the uncertainty regarding the possible departure of the coach, two candidates spoke about the situation.
Despite the rumors, Fernando Gago remains Boca's coach after reports circulated that the match with Rosario Central would be his last, following the historic elimination of the Xeneizes in phase 2 of the Copa Libertadores against Alianza Lima led by Pipo Gorosito.
A week ago, the continuity of Pintita had been put into question, however, his statement that he never considered resigning and the victory over Canalla to leave them at the top of Zone A of the Torneo Apertura suggest that his departure is not as clear as it was a week ago.
Beyond what the coach says and his results, the club's management, led by Juan Román Riquelme, has evaluated possible replacements in case of his removal, among them Cristian "Kily" González, coach of Unión de Santa Fe, who spoke on the matter.
"No, I haven't received any calls. I believe the people at Boca know me, how I conduct myself. I am very committed to this club since I arrived, hopefully, God willing, we can improve in every way to be competitive," said the "Tatengue" coach.
Additionally, he added that it's not time to be thinking about coaching Boca. "Do you think that in the situation I'm going through sports-wise, which is not what I imagined since I started preseason in Uruguay, I'm going to be thinking about Boca? It's disrespectful to the people of Unión," argued Kily.

Another who spoke on the subject was Eduardo Domínguez, coach of Estudiantes de La Plata, although with a message that leaves more doubts than certainties. "Seven coaches have passed through Boca. It seems they don't like me much," stated the "Pincharata" coach.

The possible candidates to replace Gago
While it seems that Gago will remain in his position for now, rumors circulate about contacts between the Xeneize management and several renowned coaches. Among the mentioned candidates are Antonio Mohamed, current coach of Toluca in Mexico, and Ricardo Gareca, who coaches the Chilean national team. According to reports, Boca has contacted Turco to explore his availability in case Gago leaves his position, while Tigre is held in high regard for his vast experience and knowledge of Argentine soccer.

However, the name that grabs all the spotlight is undoubtedly Gerardo Martino. The "Tata" has been without a club since November last year after coaching Inter Miami of Messi and has led other important teams and national teams, such as Barcelona or the national teams of Argentina, Paraguay, and Mexico.
According to journalist Daniel Cacioli, his arrival is very advanced, while Martín Arevalo mentioned that he spoke with the coach and that he commented that he likes how the team is set up for this 2025. This last factor is key, as in 2023 he had rejected an offer from Juan Román Riquelme and, unlike that moment, now he seems to have a reason to go to Boca.
