La Derecha Diario Imf: What Are the Keys to Reaching a New Agreement
The main pending point is determining the final amount and the sequence of disbursements.
President Javier Milei will hold a key meeting this Thursday with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, in Washington.
The meeting is part of his tour of the United States and aims to advance the definition of a new program with the organization.
Negotiations in the final stage
The presidential spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, confirmed that the meeting will be at 7:00 PM (Argentine time) and takes place in a context of decisions about the sequence of disbursements and the amount of the new program. According to the Minister of Economy, Luis Caputo, an agreement has already been reached with the IMF on the exchange rate scheme, which will include the use of the dollars sent by the organization.
The main pending point is the determination of the final amount and the sequence of disbursements. Caputo assured that the IMF did not demand a devaluation and that the objective of the agreement is to strengthen the recapitalization of the Central Bank without increasing the country's net debt.
The role of Congress and policies to be defined
The resulting agreement will be sent to Congress for approval, as it will imply a change of creditor, transforming intra-public sector debt into liabilities with the IMF. Additionally, the continuity of the "crawling peg", the percentage of export liquidations destined for the cash with settlement market, and the current exchange restrictions will be discussed.
IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack indicated that "the new program will aim to leverage the progress made and address the pending challenges". She also highlighted the importance of maintaining consistent fiscal, monetary, and exchange policies to consolidate Argentina's economic stability.
Milei's tour in the United States
Milei will also meet with American businessman and official Elon Musk and participate in the Conservative Action Conference alongside Donald Trump.
His speech at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will focus on the Argentine economic model and the structural reforms promoted by his government.
