The Woke Movie 'emilia Pérez' Was the Big Loser at the 2025 Bafta Gala.

At the awards ceremony known as the pre-Oscars, 'Cónclave' and 'The Brutalist' were favorites over the narco-musical.

The BAFTA awards ceremony has established itself as one of the most important events in cinema, considered by many experts as an indicator of potential Oscar winners.

The list of nominations was led by  "Conclave," with twelve nominations, followed by the genre film  "Emilia Pérez" with eleven and "The Brutalist," with nine. Other notable films included  "Anora," "Dune: Part 2" and "Wicked," all with seven nominations, while "Kneecap" and "Bob Dylan: A Complete Unknown" received six each.

"Emilia Pérez" and the controversy at the 2025 BAFTA

The film promoting harmonization directed by Jacques Audiard, arrived with high expectations after receiving eleven nominations. However, the controversy surrounding its lead, Karla Sofía Gascón, influenced its performance at the gala, making it the big loser of the night.

The transvestite Gascóndid not attend the ceremony in London. Her absence was linked to acontroversy caused by old "racist and xenophobic messages" on the social network X. This situation led Netflix to remove her from any promotional activity for the film.

Audiard described Gascón's comments as "inexcusable" and noted that the actress adopted a "self-destructive attitude." Meanwhile, Gascón announced that she would remain silent to avoid affecting "the film's journey" toward the Oscars. Despite the controversy, "Emilia Pérez" remained one of the most talked-about productions of the year, accumulating thirteen nominations at the Hollywood Academy Awards.

Gascón's co-star in the film, Zoe Saldaña, won in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in "Emilia Pérez." In her speech, the actress thanked the cast and highlighted the film's impact on the audience.

"Conclave" and "The Brutalist" dominated the 2025 BAFTA

"Conclave," directed by Edward Berger and starring Ralph Fiennes, was the big winner of the night with four awards, including Best Film and Best British Film. The production, set in the Vatican, started as the most nominated with twelve nominations and positioned itself as one of the favorites for the Oscars.

"The Brutalist" matched "Conclave" in statuettes, standing out with awards for Best Director for Brady Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody. In this category, Brody surpassed Timothée Chalamet, who  portrayed Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown," and Ralph Fiennes, nominated multiple times.

In the case of the narcomusical "Emilia Pérez," it had to settle for 2 awards: Best Non-English Film and Best Supporting Actress, Zoe Saldaña.

With its 78th edition, the BAFTA awards reaffirmed their role as a key barometer of the film season, leaving a significant mark on the road to the Oscars.
