Pan Congresswoman Proposes Eliminating 'estados Unidos Mexicanos' and Leaving Only 'méxico'

Kenia López said that the initiative seeks to simplify the country's name and strengthen its national identity.

The federal deputy from the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN), Kenia López Rabadán, presented a constitutional reform initiative to change the country's official name from "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" to simply "México".

The proposal seeks to strengthen national identity and simplify the denomination in official documents and international forums.

Arguments of the initiative

López Rabadán argues that the name "México" more accurately reflects the identity and roots of the more than 120 million Mexicans. According to the deputy, the current denomination can cause confusion, and its simplification would allow for better representation of the country in international organizations such as the UN and the OAS.

Additionally, she emphasizes that this change would reinforce national unity and facilitate administrative procedures by unifying the official nomenclature.

Historical background

This is not the first time a modification to the country's official name has been proposed. In November 2012, then-President Felipe Calderón presented a similar initiative to remove "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" and leave only "México."

Calderón argued that the country did not need a name that emulated another nation and that "México" was a more authentic and representative denomination. However, the proposal did not succeed in Congress.

Implications of the name change

Modifying the country's official name would involve a series of adjustments in different areas:

  • Official documentation: It would require updating documents such as passports, birth certificates, and official records to reflect the new denomination.
  • International treaties: It would be necessary to notify international organizations and partners about the change to maintain consistency in agreements and treaties.
  • Associated costs: Implementing this modification would involve significant expenses in documents, signage, and other official elements.

Reactions and perspectives

The proposal has caused various opinions in the political and social spheres. Some sectors believe that the change would strengthen national identity and eliminate possible international confusions.

On the other hand, there are those who argue that, given the current economic and social context, this type of initiative should not be a priority and that resources could be allocated to more urgent areas.

The initiative will be discussed in the corresponding committees of the Chamber of Deputies, where its benefits, costs, and feasibility will be evaluated.

If approved, México would officially adopt the name that, in practice, is already used by the majority of its citizens and in the international arena.
