Live Elections: Daniel Noboa and the Correísta González vie for the presidency
If no candidate wins with more than 50% of the votes or a difference of more than 10 points, there will be a runoff.
Ecuador went to the polls again this Sunday to hold general elections in a highly polarized scenario. The main contest is between the current president, Daniel Noboa, who is seeking reelection, and Luisa González, representative of correísmo and candidate of Revolución Ciudadana.
More than 13.7 million citizens were called to vote in a day that proceeded normally and without reports of incidents, according to the authorities. The polling stations remained open until 5:00 PM local time, with a high turnout of voters, driven by the mandatory nature of voting for citizens between 18 and 64 years old. For those over 65 and Ecuadorians residing abroad, voting is voluntary.
Although 16 candidates are competing for the presidency, the dispute has concentrated on two main adversaries. Noboa, from the Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN) party, seeks to remain in power after assuming the presidency in 2023, while González aims to return the government to Revolución Ciudadana, the political movement linked to former president Rafael Correa, after eight years out of power.
Ecuador elections live:
02:50: With 88.6% of the votes counted, a runoff between Noboa and González is confirmed. The current president of Ecuador obtains 44.36% of the votes while the correísta accumulates 43.9%.
22:53: With 31% of the votes counted, Noboa maintains the lead with 45.64% of the votes compared to 42.95% for González.
20:12: The exit poll by Diego Tello, broadcast by Teleamazonas, gives Noboa the victory with 50.12% of the votes, compared to 42.21% for Luisa González.
