Pokémon Day 2025: All the Details of a Day Full of Announcements

Pokémon Z-A, the return of Mega Evolutions; Pokémon Championship, the new app, and much more.

Every February 27,  Pokémon fans celebrate the anniversary of the release of Pokémon Red & Green in Japan, the titles that started one of the most successful franchises in video game history.

In 2025, The Pokémon Company celebrated the saga's 29th anniversary with a 19-minute presentation, in which they revealed important news.

One of the most notable moments of the event for the Latin American audience was the participation of Tomás Cortijo, Regional Director of LATAM for Pokémon, who announced that both the Trading Card Game (TCG) and Pokémon Z-A will incorporate support in Latin American Spanish.

Updates for current Pokémon games

The event began with a series of updates for ongoing games:

  • Pokémon Masters EX: The legendary Pokémon Kyogre, Groudon, and Shiny Rayquaza are added in their primal forms.
  • Pokémon GO: New fifth-generation creatures are added, along with Kubfu and Urshifu from the ninth generation. Throughout the year, there will be special events.
  • Pokémon Sleep: It will incorporate dream-themed Pokémon, such as Cresselia and Darkrai.
  • Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: New Pokédex cases will be gifted with the codes SB00KC0VER (Scarlet) and VB00KC0VER (Violet). Additionally, there will be events with the starters in their final evolution, available in Tera Raid Battles with exclusive moves.

  • Pokémon Pocket: The popular mobile installment will receive an update on February 28, with the arrival of Arceus EX and the promise of ranked battles by the end of March.

The most important announcements: Pokémon Z-A and Pokémon Champions

The biggest surprises of the event were related to the franchise's future.

Pokémon Legends Z-A

Pokémon Z-A: the return of Mega Evolutions and a new battle system

For days, there was speculation about the arrival of Pokémon Z-A, and several rumors were finally confirmed. The trailer showed the main city, new NPCs, and the available starters: Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig, leaving out Cyndaquil, which had prominence in Legends: Arceus.

However, what most impacted fans was the return of Mega Evolutions and the introduction of a new battle system, closer to an Action RPG, moving away from the classic turn-based battles that Pokémon has used for 29 years.

Pokémon Champions

Pokémon Champions: a new competitive platform

To complement these changes, The Pokémon Company and Game Freak announced the development of Pokémon Champions, a new application that will work on both Nintendo Switch and mobile devices.

Although not many details have been revealed yet,  it is known that it will allow transferring Pokémon from any game through Pokémon Home and will serve as an exclusive space for competitive play. With this decision, the company aims to separate competitive play from the main titles, allowing them to develop games without worrying about how to implement online battles.

A Pokémon Day with great promises

Pokémon Day 2025 made it clear that the franchise continues to evolve.  With the return of Mega Evolutions, a new focus on the battle system, and the creation of a dedicated competitive platform, Pokémon is betting on a future with more accessibility, innovation, and a variety of experiences for its players.
