The host was the star figure of Channel 9's newscast for years, but he decided to switch sides.
Amid his contentious departure from El Nueve, journalist and host Esteban Mirol announced his move to C5N with a new magazine, which caused a stir in the television world. After more than 20 years on the channel's screen, his resignation sparked suspicions and strong reactions, especially after his immediate transfer to another network became known.
The scandal erupted when Rodrigo Lussich, on Intrusos (América TV), claimed that Mirol's departure from El Nueve hadn't been entirely transparent. According to the journalist, at the time of his resignation, Mirol had stated that he wanted to step away from the media to focus exclusively on digital projects. However, a few days later, he announced his incorporation into C5N, which sparked outrage among his former channel colleagues.
"He said he was retiring in front of thousands of people on screen. He expressed that he had no planned activity in the field and lied. In reality, he went to another channel", Lussich stated. He also claimed that the reaction at El Nueve wasn't positive: "They believed him and bid him farewell with tears. Now they're furious because he announced his move to another channel."
Esteban Mirol replied to the criticism for his incorporation into C5N
After the controversy, Mirol broke his silence in an interview with Pablo Montagna on Pasa Montagna (Radio Rivadavia), where he made it clear that his decision to leave was voluntary and that he hadn't deceived anyone.
"I resigned of my own free will to dedicate myself to other projects away from hard news", he stated. In that context, he revealed that starting next weekend he will debut with a magazine on C5N, a different format from what he used to host.
"I spoke with the channel to do a magazine, not a newscast, on weekends from 9 to 12 am. The contract isn't signed yet, but it's supposed to be like that. The idea is to do something fun, about travel and a lot of things", he detailed.
Despite his new role at C5N, Mirol won't be limited to a single channel. He will also participate in four specials on Telefe in the section Familias argentinas, where he will explore different stories across the country.
