The Fortress Mansion Where Gene Hackman, His Wife, and His Dog Were Found Lifeless

The immense rustic-style property is located on a hill, and the actor rarely left it.

The renowned actor Gene Hackman, star of classics like The French Connection, Unforgiven, and Superman, was found dead alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and his pet at their residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The shocking news shook Hollywood, while the circumstances of the event remain not fully clarified.

Hackman resided in that property since the late 80s, when he decided to settle in a more peaceful environment. The house, of rustic style, was surrounded by an arid landscape and located in a dry climate characteristic of the region. In the early years, the actor commissioned a complete renovation from Studio Arquitectura de Santa Fe, with the intention of completely transforming the property.

In an interview given to Architectural Digest in 1990, Hackman confessed that his choice of Santa Fe was influenced by his experience in several shoots in the area. "It has a kind of magic," he commented at that time.

The architect Stephen Samuelson, in charge of the remodeling, described the original condition of the property as  "horrible." According to him, it was a block building from the 50s that was deteriorated and unused. However, he highlighted that the foundations were well-set and the site had great potential.

Hackman's involvement in the renovation

Hackman actively participated in every aspect of the redesign. He expressed his desire to have a large main living room with open and connected rooms, unlike his previous homes. His level of commitment even led him to collaborate in the demolition and to mix colors in his own palette to precisely indicate the desired tones in the decoration.

In the year 2000, according to TMZ, the property received new improvements with more modern technology. Since then, little information has been available about the house, as  Hackman led an increasingly private life. In the last 20 years, he was seen in public on rare occasions. The most recent occurred a month ago, when a friend captured a photo of him and posted it on social media.
